Just a quick reminder for those going to Saturday morning's CHAMPS meet at Penns Valley (Millheim).

Directions to Penn's Valley Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Pool in Millheim:

Follow 45 East from State College/Boalsburg. From Centre Hall (intersection of Routes 45 and 144) travel east on Route 45.  As you enter Millheim, go straight at the traffic light, take a slight left (after the bridge) onto Park Road.  Park Road then turns to the left, follow Park Road until it takes a left into the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Park. - Drive time approx. 30 minutes from State College.  Please drive carefully.

Nothing works up a good appetite better than a morning swim or being a Team Parent Meet Volunteer.  So Welch Swim Team Swimmers and Parents that are going to Saturday (8/02) morning's CHAMPS 10 & Under Meet at Penns Valley - The Penns Valley Swim Team will have breakfast available from their concession stand.  I included their information below to whet your appetites.  Give them a try and see if the Penns Valley group has what it takes to dethrone the league's more famous Swamp Shack. ;-)

1.) You'll be surprised how much of what we do is local - - it is important to people in our community to use local resources as often and in as many ways as possible! You may very well be eating greens that were grown in someone's garden SPECIFICALLY for this event. You could be enjoying an egg from a chicken who enjoys a beautiful life of grass and bugs and sunshine IN beautiful Penns Valley.
2.) You'll be surprised at the quality and variety of truly healthy items, that look good and taste even better! We want you and your swimmers to have a variety of great choices - - and our CHAMPS team has been planning this brekkie for WEEKS.
3.) Unlike some teams, Penns Valley Swim Team (and our pool) get NO municipal funding. Concession stand sales are THE major part of our team's ability to purchase and update equipment that benefits all the swimmers in our league (we have our eyes on NEW LANE LINES for 2014 - - and if you've never priced 'em out, you should).

Welch Team Banquet & Awards - Saturday (8/03 ) 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM

Saturday (8/3) - Welch Swim Team End of Season Awards Banquet and Night Swim
Welch Swim Team's Annual End of Season Awards Banquet will be held Saturday evening from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM.  We will celebrate the end of the Welch Swim Team season with swimmer awards, food, a season highlight video, and swimming.  As was in prior years, this is a potluck type event where pizza and drinks will be provided and we ask each family to bring a food item to share as follows:

Last names A to M: Help with set-up at 5:30 and bring a side dish or salad
Last names N to Z:  Help with clean-up and bring a desert.

Please use this 2013 Welch Swim Team Banquet RSVP so that we can obtain an appropriate headcount.

There is one major change to this year's banquet compared to prior years.  We will start the banquet indoors at the State College High School NORTH building cafeteria.  The indoor start insures that we can continue with the food and awards with little concern with the outside weather conditions.  Furthermore, the season video can be viewed much sooner and without the need to wait for darkness which should help those families with younger children to see the video.  At the completion of the indoor activities we will move back to Welch Pool for the team's family members open swim period until 9:30 PM.

PARKING:
For Banquet parking, please continue to use either parking lot on the Westerly Parkway side of the school and Welch Pool because we will move to the pool for the team family open swim after the completion of all indoor activities.

Welch Pool - Morning Parking CHANGE

Good morning Welch Parents,

We've been informed that beginning on Tuesday, July 30 it will be necessary to park your cars across the street in the NORTH High School parking lot during Welch Swim Team's morning practice.  The State High Marching Band will be practicing in the South Building's lot from 9:00AM until 12 noon.

Thank you to all the Welch Parents who volunteered for last Thursday's Welch Sharks Pancake Breakfast.  We had a flurry of volunteers come together to provide griddles, spatulas, and help prepare and serve our hungry sharks.  Weatherwise, it was a perfect morning for hot pancakes and the swimmers appeared to enjoy this team treat.

Also, thank you to all the Welch Parents who volunteered to assist with the running the away meet Thursday evening at SPRA.  Your turnout made the meet run fast and efficient.  We hope you enjoyed the meet volunteer experience.  We greatly appreciate and look forward to your continued service and hope that many more of our Welch Parents will join us on deck.

WELCH TEAM update: PANCAKE BREAKFAST & SPRA MEET for Thursday, 7/25

7/25 (THUR) Pancake Breakfast for Welch swimmers after each age group's morning swim practice
*Bring your own drink.  We will provide the pancakes, butter, syrup, plates, cutlery, & napkins.*
8:00 AM ages 13-18  (volunteer time 7:40 to 8:25)
9:00 AM ages 9-12  (volunteer time 8:40 to 9:25)
9:45 AM ages 5-8  (volunteer time 9:25 to 10:05)

Parent volunteers are needed to assist with this activity.  We need six (6) griddles and spatulas.  If you have a griddle/spatula to loan, let me know directly - I will be at each morning's practice this week.  You can bring your griddle/spatula to the pool ahead of time where we can store them in the team's storage room.  Please place your name on masking tape and attach to your griddle and spatula. We added a Sign Up Genius link for those that wish to help and/or loan equipment for Thursday, but are unable to sign up at the pool Mon-Wed morning.

We just finished the Penns Valley/Lewistown away meet that was so nice we are going to swim it twice, but this time it's Thursday - tomorrow 7/18 - at WELCH POOL.  We encourage and rely upon our swim parents to be involved and volunteer with hosting our last home meet of the season.  Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

For this meet we still have a number of unfilled and much needed volunteer positions in both the meet and concession stand areas.

CHAMPS MEET INFO

Hey Sharks!!

There have been some questions circling about how many events you can swim at Championships.  The Championship meet requires you (swimmer) be at at least 2 meets (not counting Day of Joy or the Pentathlon) to be eligible to sign-up.

AS FOR the events you can sign up for, it is like a regular swim meet.  You will pick from either 2 individual events and 2 relays or 3 individual events and 1 relay.

MAKE SURE that you pick EXACTLY 2 or EXACTLY 3 events for individuals.

AS FOR relays, I will make the fastest relays possible, you might not end up being with your friends!

Park Forest Day of Joy Relay Meet (for Welch Swimmers)

Every year, we do a "Day of Joy" relay meet at Park Forest. It's a fun, little bit goofy, unscored meet held on a Saturday every summer (July 20th in this case).

We have a flyer handout about the meet that you can find HERE.

It contains almost everything you need to know about the meet. If you have any questions, talk to your coaches.

The good news for parents is that the Park Forest food crew will be there making breakfast.

If you wish to experience unbounded joy, you should go to this meet.

CHAMPS information

Orders for CHAMPS shirts are due Wednesday, July 17.  Please print the order form from the ‘Champs’ tab above and return the form with your payment to Holly Torbic or Sean Flynn.  Checks need to be payable to ‘Welch Swim Team.’  Shirts will be delivered at CHAMPS.
 

Our league will hold an end-of-season CHAMPS meet again this year.  CHAMPS is a league wide five team (Welch, Park Forest, SPRA, Penns Valley, and Lewistown) competition.  All events are scored individually, with awards being given to the top 12 places within each age group.  Swimmers can swim in 4 events of their choice.

The end-of-season CHAMPS meets will be held the first weekend of August.  ‘Big Kid’ CHAMPS (ages 11 and up) will be held Friday, August 2 at 6:00 pm at Lewistown.  ‘Little Kid’ CHAMPS (ages 10 and under) will be held at Penns Valley on Saturday morning, August 3.  Swimmers need to swim in 2 meets during the season in order to participate in CHAMPS. 

There will be a sign-up form specifically for CHAMPS, which will be available next week.  It will be posted under the ‘Champs’ tab and also available at the pool.  Please see Stephen Boris with questions.

SWIM MEET TONIGHT

Hey Sharks!

Just reminding you all that tonight is an away meet.  We will be going to Park Forest to face the Bullfrogs!  I would like all of our swimmers there by 5:00-5:15pm.  Welch warm-up time is going to be at 5:30, and the meet will start at 6:00.

Also, Tomorrow's practice will be a fun day regardless of the outcome of the meet.  Fun day's times are as follows:

8-9am) 11&up swimmers
9-9:45) 10&under swimmers

Please PLEASE don't show up at 6:45!

                  During the Clinic we will work on technique for all four competitive strokes.  All SCAY coaches and many of our senior swimmers will be on deck each day helping your swimmers learn about their swimming and the importance of being on a swimming team.

                  At the conclusion of the Clinic swimmers will receive a Clinic t-shirt and a certificate of participation.  SCAY will begin our Fall/Winter season on Monday, September 9.

                  During the week of the Clinic there will be information provided to you concerning the exciting aspects of being on SCAY.

                  If at any time you have questions, please feel free to contact me at the numbers listed below.  We at SCAY look forward to the opportunity to work with your swimmers, and, of course, all the parents.

IMPORTANT - information needed for end-of-season swimmer gift

Hi Welch Sharks,

We are trying something different for the end-of-season gift for the swimmers this year.  This gift will replace the trophies and alternative gifts we have given in the past.  Below you will find a link with the roster that was given to us by CRPR.  Please click on the link and provide the following information:

·         Verify that your child is on the list.

·         Check that his/her name is spelled correctly.

·         If your child prefers a nickname, or another name, please put it in the ‘Change name to…’ column.  Please DO NOT change the name in the first 2 columns.

·         Indicate the size of shirt your child wears.  Choose Youth S-XL and Adult S-XL.

Update on tonight's SPRA meet

I wanted to give you an update for tonight.  We are planning the meet as scheduled, knowing that there is a high probability that we will have delays.  The forecast for tonight looks ugly.  However, there are very few dates to re-schedule the meet, since there has to be a public pool open each night.  We will try to get as much of the meet in, while making sure everyone is safe.

Penns Valley Pentathlon

We received the following information from our friends at Penns Valley.  Please contact Cindy (clinzell@gmail.com) for a copy of the registration if you are interested.

On behalf to the Penns Valley Penguins Swim Team I would like to invite swimmers to the first annual Penns Valley Pentathlon.  This meet will take place at the Soldiers and Sailors Pool in Millheim Pa. on Saturday, July 27th.

The meet consists of five events. One event of each of the 4 four strokes and an individual medley event.  This is an open meet and any swimmer able to complete these events is encouraged to participate.  No seed times are required.

Swimmers will be divided into boys and girls, and compete in age groups as follows:

8&under (25yd stroke events and 100yd IM)

9&10 (25yd stroke events and 100yd IM)
11&12 (50yd stroke events and 100yd IM)
13&14 (50yd stroke events and 100yd IM)
15&over (50yd stroke events and 100yd IM)

This meet does require a small entry fee to participate.  The proceeds will benefit the Penns Valley Penguins Swim Team.  This is an excellent chance for swimmers to showcase all they have learned during the summer swim season.  We hope you are able to attend.  

 

In order to guarantee a tee shirt, your registration must be received by Saturday, July 6th.
